Some images of the new steam loco, A1 No. 60163 'Tornado' which has made its first movements under its own power in steam at Darlington.

The project to build the first main line steam loco in the UK for 50 years has taken 18 years to come to fruition, but it is a fantastic achievement, and hearty congratulations to all involved.

The loco will move to the Great Central Railway in August for trials and preparation for main line certification. One this has been achieved the loco will be painted.

3rd Jun 2006Statfold Barn Railway
A few miles east of Tamworth is the Statfold Barn Railway. It is a private railway, with visits by invitation only.

The railway consists of a newly developed dual narrow gauge line of both 2ft and 2ft 6in , and 1.5 miles in length around land owned by Graham Lee, chairman of specialist engineering firm L H Plant.

All of the facilities at the railway have been built on land owned by Mr Lee, to create one of the most impressive private railways in the country. With a station, three-road loco shed with pit and crane, a fully equipped workshop, traverser, and turntable.

At one end of the operating line is a loop to turn the trains. In addition there is another 2ft gauge around a lake in the grounds of the sprawling farmhouse. Next step is the construction of a standard gauge line.

It is the ultimate garden railway.

About Me
Some of you may know of me in connection with my role as Deputy Editor on The Railway Magazine - Britain's best-selling all-round monthly railway periodical.

The purpose of this gallery is to provide a showcase for some of the railway images taken in the course of my job that may, for a variety of reasons, not see the light of day in print.

I also have a passion for other forms of transport, architecture and other photographic subjects, so galleries of a non-railway nature will appear and be updated from time to time.

One of the question that is often asked is what does it take to get a photograph published in the railway press? In short a number of factors - speed of submission, topicality, composition, technique, exposure and sharpness, newsworthiness and so on. It’s the content and composition that matters, not who took it.

Try your luck and send some thumbnails to railway@ipcmedia.com and we may well get back to you for hi-res versions.

Because of the sheer volume submitted each week, we can't reply to everyone - sorry, it's nothing personal!
